| Small Luxury Hotels was created in 1991 as the result of a merger between Prestige Hotels Europe and Small Luxury Hotels & Resorts of North America, the two groups combining over 30 years’ experience of international hotel marketing. SLH was formed to represent the collective interests of the most luxurious, independent, exclusive hotels and resorts around the world. The consortium's activities are designed to provide similar economies of scale achieved by the big international hotel chains, yet maintaining the individuality and independence of each of its member properties. In 1995, SLH merged with the Asian and Pacific properties of Select Hotels and Resorts International, creating a global membership and adding marketing services and reservations coverage in these regions. By 1997, the consortium’s membership exceeded 230 hotels in over 30 countries; by the latter half of 2002 this had increased to more than 290 hotels in over 50 countries.
